Now You See Me review

This movie matches up to my expectations, with its witty humour, quick camerawork and most of all...MAGIC!

This ensemble cast does not disappoint with their acting skills put to use very uniquely. Jesse Eisenberg fails to disappoint again, hence...HE WAS AWESOME! By far the best role in the film and the only actor who looked in his element, even with all the havoc that transpired around him. Isla Fisher was by far the biggest disappointment in the acting side of things, underperforming amongst the vast number of actors in the film. Mélanie Laurent portrays her role of a french interpol agent very competently.
Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco were funny as well as believable in their beautifully-scripted characters.
Last but not least, the trio of the SUPERHERO movies, Mark Ruffalo (Avengers), Morgan Freeman (Dark Knight Trilogy) and Michael Cane (Dark Knight Trilogy), did what they do best, act exceptionally well and fulfill their given roles with their own twist.

SPOILER ALERT!

Plot....I loved it! I love the way the director, Louis Letterier, uses a very Nolanesque approach to his direction (some may call it immitation.... I call it brilliant). Sometimes he seems to ramble on about something that seems quite unnecessary but then...BOOM! It eventually becomes the "grip" that holds the film together...at the end.

"There are so many twists, turns and 'shocking reveals' that we're soon bogged down by a top-heavy narrative that then collapses with a final reversal that's stunning in its sheer ridiculousness."

In the first half of the film...the way all the individual magicians are found and approached, just pulls the audience in with a very Avengers like feel. There are many slick magic tricks, especially the card trick by Jesse Eisenberg, which introduces his character.
The second half, does kind of disappoint, due to the film being dragged on for almost half an hour, with no real purpose...BUT after all that, the ending "will amaze".

No doubt that the film has a fantastic story and concept which expands the narrow-minded thought about magic...taking it to the level that everyone thinks about, but never shows on the silver screen.
If IMDB is anything to go by, the film received a 7.5/10 rating.

The two pillars of this film would have to be the story and the cast... the direction, is "not everyone's piece of cake". Although, this film is fictitious...the characters truly come to life.
This film is not like the brilliance that was "The Prestige", but this film does exactly what it is meant to...ENTERTAIN! In a nutshell "4 amazing magicians. 3 impossible heists. 1 billion dollars. This is no illusion."

Lootera review

Lootera is a very emotional and well made film by director Vikramaditya Motwane, who brilliantly continues on from his previous success of Udaan (2010) and carries on with it in Lootera. From the off set you will understand that this is a slow paced romantic saga that will not be the fancy of the "entertainment-loving" audience that usually resides in the Bollywood public but this film is more for the keen eyed individuals that, despite being slow, will appreciate much of the film's story, music and cinematography.

This film is another love story for this 2013 year, in which we have had amazing films like 'Raanjhanaa' and 'Aashiqui 2'....but this film competes with them on the same level as the chemistry between Varun and Pakhi was beautifully portrayed by Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha respectively.
If the box office collections are anything to go by, this film is a "BIG FLOP" which actually does not mean anything, because many artistically rich films are not given the praise they deserve in Bollywood.

Lootera, with its minor flaws in story telling, does impress with its well written story that is extremely riveting in the pre-intermission stage, however the second half does become quite flat, direction wise, but I believe the acting of Sonakshi Sinha carries the film from there on out. She breathes and walks the role like never before. For her, this film is the discovery of a new actress who was until now busy in meaningless characters in potboilers. Ranveer Singh excels in the first half however in the second half, he falters in dialogue delivery. He fails to pack that punch in his act, which could be one of the downsides of the film.
"The support cast of Adil Hussain is top notch and Barun Chandra is good, Arif Zakaria is decent, music is excellent and cinematography is brilliant". Furthermore, a man who packs a punch in a small appearance is Vikrant Massey. Cool, calm, poised and hits the nail on the head with the task that was given to him.

The action sequences in the film were not as many as I expected but they were not bad, these scenes justified their purpose, that was to show to the audience what has been going on between the intermission break.

Music is one of the biggest pluses of the film as Amit Trivedi impresses again with great soundtracks. All songs add to the film and help to set the mood. Cinematography by Mahendra J Shetty is excellent and he is the man who keeps you interested despite slow pace.
Without giving any official "SPOILER ALERT"'s .... this film is based on the book "The Last Leaf", which kind of defines the post-intermission section of the movie.

Personally, I quite enjoyed the film, mainly for the story behind it all, the love that slowly develops between the two characters.

Aashiqui 2 review

Aashiqui 2 is a beautifully directed, brilliantly scripted film that involves fairly fresh faces to present their talent in an exceptional romanctic saga.

The direction was great, some camera angles were exquisite in their result. Mohit Suri, director, did not make this as a sequel to the original Aashiqui (1990), but just used the name of the franchise and the film did not disappoint. It was a blockbuster at the box office collecting over 80 Crores in India and over 100 Crore Rupees worldwide (1,000,000,000 rupees). I don't think direction was a very integral part of this film, rather it was more the acting and the chemistry of the leading roles that did it for me.

The story and the acting of the two main characters, Rahul and Arohi, played by Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor respectively, were the key selling points.
Shagufta Rafique, the writer, scripted this film with the utmost brilliance that only happens a few times in a year. Without giving any of the plot away...I like the way Rahul develops into the type of man that he does while Arohi becomes more endearing through out the film.

SPOILER ALERT!

Aditya Roy Kapur, this is his first film as a lead and he nailed it. He was meant to be a drunk and he looked the part. When he was taking part in his rehab, the struggles he went through and the way Aditya portrayed Rahul's character, was absolutely brilliant. When he shouts "Just go away! GO AWAAYY" that scene blew my mind, the entirity of it. Some people say that his acting was very expressionless, but the thing is, his role required that. He was meant to be looking like a binge drinker who cared about nothing but himself...till Arohi came into the mix.

Arohi Keshav Shirke, played by Shraddha Kapur...made me fall in love with her all through out the film. She has to be THE highlight of the film. I understand the role was crazy awesome, but to pull that role off, in only her 2nd film, she was mindblowing. I definitely consider her to be a great prospect for the future of Bollywood. Arohi's character had to be the sweetest and most caring roles that I've seen in the 21st century. You can't do anything but fall in love with her.

The instantly apparent chemistry between the two ran this film at the boxoffice for 6 weeks straight, which is pathbreaking for such a low budget film. This movie was special, escpecially as it had a certain Rockstar type theme to it mixed with old school hindi films, which just amalgamated brilliantly together.

I had to think very hard about this, but the bad points about the film had to be the mixture of so many things taking place in a fairly short space of time. That and the fact that (eventhough believable) Rahul just can not control his temper and his addiction kind of takes its toll after the many-nth times that happens during the film.

Jeet Ganguly, Ankit Kapoor, Mithoon and whoever else that was involved with the composition and execution of the songs in this film must be saluted for the outstanding music they have produced. "Tum Hi Ho" and "Sunn Raha Hai Tu" have to be the most beautifully composed and poetically lyricised pieces of music I have ever heard. "Tum Hi Ho" especially causes goosebumps on my arms and in the movie the scenes that this song is played in, all those scenes are such critical components of the film that the music just enhances that emotion you will be feeling inside.

In conclusion, this film is AWESOME! Just awesome!

I give this film 9/10 "9 out of 10"

Rating: Awesome! Brilliant! Best Music thus far this year

Raanjhanaa review

Epic love stories, epic love sagas, epic romances...basically anything with "epic" nowadays just means a long winded approach to romance, BUT a synonym of the word "epic" as defined by Google is "heroic", which I think completely satisfies the lead character of Kundan, played by Dhanush. That does not mean to say you wouldn't question some of the decisions he makes but just like "Man Of Steel", the new approach to heroism is that the ends must justify the means! Personally, Not a big fan of this new theory that films are following, but I think in this film, they try and cancel out that effect during the movie, while not making any of the plot differ from its path.

Raanjhanaa does have a few similarities with Aashiqui 2 starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. Both the films belong to the genre of romance that's filled with pain and emotions. Both of them have some amazing twists and turns on all counts, but I believe Raanjhanaa beats Ashiqui 2 because of its brilliant, slightly non-linear on screen depiction. Raanjhanaa is definitely a film that shows all emotions of love, betrayal, sacrifice and even more.

Director Aanand L Rai...he directed Tanu Weds Manu which was an above average film apart from which I've not heard of him, but "OHMYGOD" this guy can direct. I understand that the reason his direction was fantastic was the spectaculat story, but credit should not be taken away from the director.

While being very much like the comedy Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, this film provides a more relatable starting and ending while being beautifully shot by the director.

This hasn't happened to me often, but this movie actually forced me to shed a tear for Dhanush's performance. It was so realistic, keeping in mind the dude is Tamil, Hindi is not his first language, which seems apparent once or twice, but still pulling off a role like that and absolutely nailing it...I applaud Dhanush. Some of the oneliners given to him are strokes of genius by Himanshu Sharma, the writer of the film, in Hindi.
After the Kolaveri Di explosion at the end of 2011, I think he has dropped another bombshell on Bollywood with this performance. Kundun, his character in the film, is a Hindu boy who falls for Sonam Kapoor's character, that is what the film revolves around.

Sonam Kapoor, she plays a Muslim girl named Zoya. Her character was very deep and the film jumps into that depth and explores it in all aspects. The character is very meaningul and definitely does want recognition. However, as much as I love Sonam Kapoor.... her acting in all her roles in very similar, like she shows the same emotions in every film "happy, sad, angry"..like that's it..I know that is a wide scope, but it's nothing new and her laugh is so fake, that it's actually funny! When she portrayed a younger Zoya, I think she was very believable, although Dhanush looked closer to 15/16. I may seem too critical on her acting but I expect a lot from Sonam Kapoor but she delivers...just the way she delivers it, is the same as in Delhi 6, I Hate Luv Storys and even Mausam. After saying all that, this film could be the road to success for her, like Jab We Met was for Kareena Kapoor.
Abhay Deol, the man who acts well in every movie he's in. His character is a strong willed political leader of an up and coming political party which is more of a background situation in the first part but becomes a lot more prominent in the second half.
Swara Bhaskar and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub fulfil their role requirements and much more, as both of them have brilliantly scripted dialogues which give the film a light-hearted feel.

"In Anand L Rai's 'Raanjhanaa' when girls were not swooning over Dhanush's charming smile and Abhay Deol's enigmatic personality, they were laughing at Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub's one liners. Ayyub stole hearts as Murari, Dhanush's best friend in the film. For that matter, even Swara Bhaskar, who played Kundan's childhood friend got noticed for her spontaneity.

To be honest I can't find any loose ends or parts of the film that I did not like. I know Sonam Kapoor has not been able to fully utilise this brilliantly written role, but in the midst of it all, it works.
Definitely A.R.Rahman's music was a great help as it was very precisely composed and excellently inserted into critical events during the film. The songs were good as well. I am literally in love with this film.

I have to give it a 9/10 "9 out of 10" No doubt about it!
Rating: Outstanding! Fantastic! Watch it millions of times and still love it! Even IMDB gave it an 8.1/10! Impressive! Best Film Of The Year so far!

Fukrey review

Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara producing duo is back) so basically there was a hint there that this film may have some depth and scope to get these two super director producers interested in the film.
To be honest it did have a very well thought out and enticing story but obviously lacked "star" power which in Bollywood is extremely important. Keeping that in mind, this is a very low budget movie which has grossed around 34 Crore Rupees (340,000,000 rupees) in 2 weeks, which is actually decent for this type of film. The joy of seeing relatively new faces all together in one film does actually make me feel very happy, but usually it disappoints...like Student Of The Year.

Now let's get into the nitty gritty, Fukrey is completely different to what I expected, in a good way. The story line was quite extraordinary in the fact that it seemed very realistic. That being said, the central concept of the film regarding "premonitions" of the future, does fail due to the fact it seems unexplained.

SPOILER ALERT!

Pulkit Sarmat and Varun Sharma have fantastic chemistry on screen, very much like Saif Ali Khan and Shahrukh Khan in Kal Ho Na Ho. It's witty, intense and quite outrageous. Pulkit Sarmat plays Hunny, who fits the role very well, and expresses his feelings in the comedic and romantic parts of the film with great ease. Sharma plays Choocha, who is the comedic centre of Fukrey. All the crazy, stupid and weird stunts and jokes were given to him, which he delivered with a certain craziness which was exactly how this character is meant to be. Priya Anand, Hunny's love interest, is good in the small role that she plays in the film, but can not match the level of Pulkit's grasp of his role. The romance between these two was very apparent from the start and was shown very well by director Mrighdeep Singh Lamba, who mixed traditional "Indian" love, with a hint of the new Hollywood feel that is constantly being added into Indian films.

Ali Fazal and Manjot Singh were flawless in the portrayals of their respective characters. Personally, Richa Chadda's role, though unique and very strong, I believe she had no character development whatsoever. It was more of a "side" role, even though by the end she became a very vital part of the film. To be honest, she looked very menacing, like actually evil with her grin, which was great acting on her part. Some of her lines were actually hilarious and excellently worded as well, for which all credit goes to Vipul Vig, who also wrote the story. The film's originality sold it to me. It was brilliantly choregraphed, how each character meets with the other.

Direction...well it was not anything special in the direction, the story is what blew me away. Average direction, however it may seem like I'm contradicting myself because the final scenes of the film were very well shot, camera angles-wise...the shot of the Sarmat and Sharma on their horses was briliiantly captured on screen.

All in all, this film does not disappoint. It's a fun watch, with its obvious outrageousness but that sells tickets in India...which this did.
