Raanjhanaa review

Epic love stories, epic love sagas, epic romances...basically anything with "epic" nowadays just means a long winded approach to romance, BUT a synonym of the word "epic" as defined by Google is "heroic", which I think completely satisfies the lead character of Kundan, played by Dhanush. That does not mean to say you wouldn't question some of the decisions he makes but just like "Man Of Steel", the new approach to heroism is that the ends must justify the means! Personally, Not a big fan of this new theory that films are following, but I think in this film, they try and cancel out that effect during the movie, while not making any of the plot differ from its path.

Raanjhanaa does have a few similarities with Aashiqui 2 starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. Both the films belong to the genre of romance that's filled with pain and emotions. Both of them have some amazing twists and turns on all counts, but I believe Raanjhanaa beats Ashiqui 2 because of its brilliant, slightly non-linear on screen depiction. Raanjhanaa is definitely a film that shows all emotions of love, betrayal, sacrifice and even more.

Director Aanand L Rai...he directed Tanu Weds Manu which was an above average film apart from which I've not heard of him, but "OHMYGOD" this guy can direct. I understand that the reason his direction was fantastic was the spectaculat story, but credit should not be taken away from the director.

While being very much like the comedy Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, this film provides a more relatable starting and ending while being beautifully shot by the director.

This hasn't happened to me often, but this movie actually forced me to shed a tear for Dhanush's performance. It was so realistic, keeping in mind the dude is Tamil, Hindi is not his first language, which seems apparent once or twice, but still pulling off a role like that and absolutely nailing it...I applaud Dhanush. Some of the oneliners given to him are strokes of genius by Himanshu Sharma, the writer of the film, in Hindi.
After the Kolaveri Di explosion at the end of 2011, I think he has dropped another bombshell on Bollywood with this performance. Kundun, his character in the film, is a Hindu boy who falls for Sonam Kapoor's character, that is what the film revolves around.

Sonam Kapoor, she plays a Muslim girl named Zoya. Her character was very deep and the film jumps into that depth and explores it in all aspects. The character is very meaningul and definitely does want recognition. However, as much as I love Sonam Kapoor.... her acting in all her roles in very similar, like she shows the same emotions in every film "happy, sad, angry"..like that's it..I know that is a wide scope, but it's nothing new and her laugh is so fake, that it's actually funny! When she portrayed a younger Zoya, I think she was very believable, although Dhanush looked closer to 15/16. I may seem too critical on her acting but I expect a lot from Sonam Kapoor but she delivers...just the way she delivers it, is the same as in Delhi 6, I Hate Luv Storys and even Mausam. After saying all that, this film could be the road to success for her, like Jab We Met was for Kareena Kapoor.
Abhay Deol, the man who acts well in every movie he's in. His character is a strong willed political leader of an up and coming political party which is more of a background situation in the first part but becomes a lot more prominent in the second half.
Swara Bhaskar and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub fulfil their role requirements and much more, as both of them have brilliantly scripted dialogues which give the film a light-hearted feel.

"In Anand L Rai's 'Raanjhanaa' when girls were not swooning over Dhanush's charming smile and Abhay Deol's enigmatic personality, they were laughing at Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub's one liners. Ayyub stole hearts as Murari, Dhanush's best friend in the film. For that matter, even Swara Bhaskar, who played Kundan's childhood friend got noticed for her spontaneity.

To be honest I can't find any loose ends or parts of the film that I did not like. I know Sonam Kapoor has not been able to fully utilise this brilliantly written role, but in the midst of it all, it works.
Definitely A.R.Rahman's music was a great help as it was very precisely composed and excellently inserted into critical events during the film. The songs were good as well. I am literally in love with this film.

I have to give it a 9/10 "9 out of 10" No doubt about it!
Rating: Outstanding! Fantastic! Watch it millions of times and still love it! Even IMDB gave it an 8.1/10! Impressive! Best Film Of The Year so far!
